      The State Key Laboratory of Microbial Metabolism at Shanghai Jiao Tong University was established in 2011. Our lab is led by Prof. Zixin Deng with 67 fellows, Which consist of 33 professors and research fellows. We are investigating bioactive secondary metabolites of microorganisms including Synthesis and Degradative pathways and their interactive model by various state-of-the-art approaches involved in moleculare biology, microbiology, biochemistry, genomics and synthetic biology. Another focus of our reacher is DNA sulphur modifications. Agrowing effort is underway to reveal the genetics of microorganisms and subsequently make use of it to improve antibiotic production and bioactivity. At the same time, we aim to cultivate experts on microbial metabolism and make contribution to pharmaceutical industry and agricultural pest prevention.

SJTU SUCCEEDS IN DEVELOPING NOVEL & ORTHOGONAL TECHNOLOGIES


      Recently, the research team led byYou Delin, an Associate Professor of State Key Laboratory of Microbial Metabolism,School of Life Sciences and Biotechnology, SJTU, succeeded in developing novel and orthogonal technologies to map phosphorothioate (PT) modifications of DNA. Their latest discovery was illustrated in paperGenomic mapping of phosphorothioates reveals partial modification of short consensus sequences,published online on JournalNature Communications. You Delin's research team, supervised by professorDeng Zixin, discovered that it is thedndgene products that incorporate sulphur into the DNA backbone as a PT in a sequence- and stereo-specific manner. NOVEL PHOSPHOROTHIOATE-BASED RESTRICTION SYSTEM REVEALED BY


     Recently, Prof. You Delin’s research team published a research paperPathological phenotypes and in vivo DNA cleavage by unrestrained activity of a phosphorothioate-based restriction system in SalmonellaonMolecular Microbiologyin the field of phosphorothioate modification of the DNA backbone. This work is coorperated with Prof. Peter C. Dedon’s team from MIT. The research team found that the presence of restriction genes in a PT-deficient mutant resulted in several pathological phenotypes rather than lethal, which is not the same with the traditional ones. The study not only expands our understandings on the physiological significance of phosphorothioate modification of the DNA, but also reveal that this special R-M system is not as same as the traditional ones. These findings will broaden the understanding of the diversity of genome self-defence.

 首页RECENT PUBLICATIONS广告      Recently international famous journal The Journal of Biological Chemistry published an important progress in enhanced enzyme kinetic stability worked by Yan Feng group, state key lab of microbial metabolism, school of life sciences and biotechnology, SJTU. In the study of the paper Enhanced Enzyme Kinetic Stability by Increasing Rigidity within the Active Site , it indicates that enhancing the rigidity of the flexible segment within the active site may provide an efficient method for improving enzyme kinetic stability, which can provide insight into how to design more efficient and thermostable biocatalysts.
