报告题目一: Innovative Microbial Biotechnology for Bio-industry

报告摘要:

Microbial biotechnology has given significant impacts on the health and economy of our human society. Here, a couple of innovative microbial technologies, such as the improvement of a famous higher fungus (Ganoderma lucidum) for producing anticancer ganoderic acids (lanostane-type triterpenoids) and manipulation of streptomycetes for producing transglutaminase (food additive), ansamitocin P-3 (anti-tumor maytansinoid) and validamycin A (the most widely-used agricultural antibiotic), will be shared with the audience. Furthermore, the rapid advancement of synthetic biology has given a strong impetus to microbial technology for bio-manufacturing. An example of using a synthetic biology chassis cell - Saccharomyces cerevisiae to produce ganoderic acids will also be illustrated in this presentation.

 

报告题目二: Exploiting Underutilised Regions of The Solar Spectrum

报告人: Dr. Daniel Canniffe  Principal Investigator

报告摘要:

Photosynthetic organisms have evolved to capture wavelengths of light that are abundant in their ecological niches, but the light-harvesting systems they employ are wasteful when the entire solar spectrum is considered. My group seeks to synthesise non-native and novel pigments with unique absorption properties in photosynthetic bacteria, and to modify the protein scaffolds that bind them, to access unused regions of the spectrum in the far-red and near-infrared, with the long-term aims of generating more efficient light-powered organisms for biotechnological exploitation, and the incorporating of long wavelength-capturing systems into crops to meet future food and energy demands.
